Exposure Visit under GEF-6 Project (December)

 Green Pahadi Foundation, in collaboration with the Watershed Department of District Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, organized a 3-day Exposure Visit (23–25 Dec 2024) for 22 progressive farmers to the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, G.B. Pant University of Agriculture & Technology, Pantnagar (U.S. Nagar), Uttarakhand. Conducted under Activity 1.2.3.7, Knowledge Sharing Interstate of the GEF-6 project, the visit was part of the Farmer Field School initiative for livestock farmers.

Participants from Dugadda block in district Pauri Garhwal, along with Community Resource Persons (CRPs), attended the visit. The visit aimed to enhance farmers’ knowledge about sustainable livestock practices and their integration into agriculture for improved livelihoods.

Key Highlights of the Farmer’s Tour

  1. Breed Characteristics of the Badri and Sahiwal Cow: Farmers gained insights into the unique attributes of the Badri and Sahiwal Cow, including their hardiness, disease resistance, and ability to thrive on limited resources in challenging terrains. Experts explained how these traits make them ideal breeds for sustainable livestock farming in Uttarakhand’s hilly regions.
  2. Milk Production and Quality: Milk production capabilities of the Badri and Sahiwal Cows was highlighted, emphasizing their high nutritional value and the potential for value-added dairy products. Farmers were encouraged to explore opportunities for processing and marketing cow milk to enhance their income.
  3. Sustainable Livestock Management Practices: Veterinary experts provided detailed guidance on best practices for feeding, breeding, and overall care of the Badri and Sahiwal Cows to ensure optimal health and productivity and transforming livestock farming into a sustainable and profitable venture. Key topics included livestock selection, breed improvement, nutrition management, fodder and feed planning, and market linkages. Experts emphasized integrating scientific practices with traditional knowledge to maximize productivity while ensuring sustainability.
  4. Vermicompost Preparation: Farmers gained hands-on experience on Vermicompost preparation using various types of agricultural residue. Best practices for presenting and using Vermicompost were shared, highlighting its potential to enhance soil fertility and support sustainable farming practices.
  5. Networking Opportunities: The visit facilitated valuable interactions between farmers, veterinary professionals, and researchers from Pantnagar University. This exchange of knowledge and experiences provided practical insights into integrating livestock farming with traditional agricultural practices. Participants appreciated the hands-on learning experience and the opportunity to network with experts and peers.
